Another ER trip
This week has been absolutely horrible. The pain in my lower right stomach was increasing in pain, I was more nauseated than usual, and more tired. The thing is that the pain was extremely sharp and stabbing---not pressure pain like I usually have. I started out the week by trying to call my GI doctor, but of course, he was out of town this week. I tried to get through the week and finally decided to call my primary care doctor and she wanted to see me. That visit on Friday was a waste of my time. All she did was listen to my stomach with her stethoscope and sent me on my way with pain medication and diagnosis of chronic stomach pain. She ran no test....NOTHING. I was so upset. By Friday (and I told my pcp this), I had already gone 2 days not eating much at all and whenever I did eat I would have extreme pain and nausea. The one thing that "helped" was pain meds and laying on my bed resting/trying to sleep.
By Saturday, the pain got worse throughout the day. I was literally in tears. Even water made me sick to my stomach and I began to run a fever of 100.5. I ate 4 oz of yogurt in the morning and get extremely sick. As the day progressed I just felt worse and worse. My best friend, Alexis, who is a PA told me that she thought I needed to go to the ER; so after talking it over with my Mom and Dad, we were headed to UVA ER at 10:45pm.
By 12:15am, I was in a bed at the ER. My vital signs were NOT good; my blood pressure was very high and so was my heart rate and my fever was still ongoing. MY BP usually runs onl 105/67 but it was 147/89! After getting IV in, I received a nice dosage of Zofran and Phentnol. Later the doctor came in and told me that I had a very severe kidney infection and severely dehydrated. I was really upset my pcp didn't figure out I had an infection nor did she run any tests to determine if anything else was going wrong. The ER docs kept me for 5 hrs, pushing fluids in me (3 liters) and trying to help me manage my pain. I was finally discharged at 5AM; got home and in bed a little after 6ish; but still didn't have a good sleep because of the pain and nausea--I couldn't really find a comfortable position to sleep either.
So,, after this dramatizing week, I again found myself in the ER---with a kidney infection. This by no means is the underlying cause of all my GI issues since the pain is different and I am running a fever. I'm still working on my doctors to see what other GI problems I may have and still working with them to try to find a good medication combo. I was told by the ER doctors however, that if I'm not any better within 3-4 days to come back to the ER or go to the primary doctor to run more test (mainly on the appendix because at first they thought it was appendicitis). Hopefully I won't have to resort to that!
I am really growing weary and discouraged with all the health problems I have endured and also this past week of feeling incredibly horrible. I'm thankful a diagnosis was found though! Thanks to all who has prayed and continues to pray! I appreciate it a lot.
